Central Methodist University celebrated its newest recipient of the Gulstad Full-Tuition Scholarship this week, as representatives from CMU, Mineral Area College, and Three Rivers College came together to recognize Dylan Bratcher of Poplar Bluff.
The September 14 event, held on the Three Rivers campus, celebrated Bratcher’s achievement as the latest to be awarded the University’s most prestigious transfer scholarship. Bratcher, who transfers from Mineral Area College, plans to major in elementary education to follow his “new sense of purpose” found working as a substitute teacher.
“What started as a temporary job sparked a deeper passion for education, and I soon knew I wanted to pursue a degree that would allow me to build a long-term career in this field,” said Bratcher, who cited Central’s flexible online options as a draw for earning his bachelor’s degree. “CMU’s online programs made it possible for me to continue substitute teaching—something that has become important not only for my career goals but also for my personal fulfillment—while still progressing toward my degree.”
At the recognition event, Dr. Rita Gulstad, CMU provost and namesake of the scholarship, lauded Bratcher for his academic ambition, commitment to service, and passion for education. She also emphasized the importance of Central’s flexible programs that allow students like Bratcher to earn degrees without putting their lives on hold.
“Dylan chose CMU because we understood that education isn't one-size-fits-all,” said Gulstad. “Our online programs allowed him to balance his work, his coaching, and his studies. As he completes his degree and moves toward his goal of becoming a full-time educator, we know he will bring the same dedication, adaptability, and genuine care for students that he has demonstrated throughout his time with us, and what he demonstrated with our partner Mineral Area College.”
Dr. Keith Zoromski, provost at Mineral Area, also spoke on Bratcher and his work, calling him someone “who represents everything we hope to see in our transfer pathway students.”
Also speaking on the day were Dr. Wes Payne, president of Three Rivers; Karen Lovette, regional dean for CMU at Poplar Bluff; and Debra Holt, education coordinator and advisor. School officials joined Bratcher and his family and friends in enjoying refreshments after the ceremonies.
The Gulstad Scholarship is offered to eligible community college students looking to transfer to Central to finish their degree. Named in honor of Dr. Gulstad, the award celebrates the outstanding quality of education provided by Central’s community college partners and reflects its namesake’s commitment to bridging the gap between these institutions and Central, ensuring that students have the support they need to succeed.
