Two former Central Methodist University professors passed away recently, as Dr. John Carter died on August 17 at the age of 70, and Dr. Roger Lembke died on August 24 at the age of 85. Both dedicated decades of their lives to teaching at Central and were revered by their students and colleagues.
“Dr. John Carter and Roger Lembke were outstanding faculty members who helped to change the lives of many Central students,” said Dr. Rita Gulstad, CMU provost. “Their vision and dedication to their profession as teachers and colleagues provided the foundations for those who followed. They truly lived the life of a scholar and had a commitment to their students’ education. We will fondly remember how they always went the extra mile.”
John Carter joined the faculty in 1980 as a professor of political science, beginning what would become a remarkable 44-year career. He retired in May 2024, having shaped the lives of generations of students. Over the course of his tenure, he authored several books, chaired the Social Sciences Division, directed the University’s graduate program, advised pre-law students, and served as a sponsor for academic and social fraternities. Known for his high standards and deep care for student growth, Carter was a demanding yet inspirational teacher who challenged his students to think critically and independently.
A memorial service honoring the life of Dr. Carter will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17 at Linn Memorial UMC, with Rev. Bill O’Neal officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Methodist University. Final arrangements are under the direction of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service of Fayette. Roger Lembke joined Central Methodist University in 1976, where he taught chemistry and served as Chair of the Science Division. His expertise, passion for teaching, and commitment to students made him a respected and valued member of the faculty. In 1983, recognizing the growing importance of computer science, Lembke attended a summer program at the University of Evansville in Indiana, earning a Master of Science in Computer Science Education. He then spearheaded the development of CMU’s computer science program. In 1999, he was named vice president of information services, a role he held until 2001. During his final four years at CMU, he returned to teaching chemistry courses. After nearly 30 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2005 and was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. His legacy of scholarship, leadership, and mentorship continues to inspire colleagues and former students.
