On Tuesday, April 8, Central Methodist University students and organizations participated in the annual Service Day, lending a hand to the community where help was needed.
Rev. Scotty Wall, campus chaplain, said the event went well and achieved its goal of connecting CMU students to the Fayette community.
“It was great seeing the students engage with each other all over the community, to see them engage with the people of Fayette,” he said.
Throughout the day, a total of around 300 CMU students helped out with beautification projects in town, as well as landscaping and cleaning at various facilities. Some groups also met with local elementary school students, volunteering to read, talk, listen, and play with young students.
Among the groups volunteering for Service Day were several sports teams, as well as the social fraternities and sororities. Service Day was planned over several months by the Religious Life Committee on campus, which worked with various city departments and businesses to determine where CMU volunteers could provide help.
“We want to inspire CMU students to incorporate the CMU values of community which are to serve, respect, and lead,” said Wall. “We hope as we engage with Fayette through our Day of Service, that these community values will be made a part of students’ lives after graduation in the communities they live in.”
Wall says the goal is to be able to hold a Day of Service once per semester.
