Band to Perform Christmas Concert

concert-band.jpgThe Central Methodist University Concert Band will be performing for the public this weekend in its annual holiday concert. The event will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 11 at Linn Memorial United Methodist Church.

Director Roy “Skip” Vandelicht and the band have a number of holiday pieces in store, including songs by two of Central’s own: “Joyance” by alumnus Claude T. Smith and “March” by former professor Ron Shroyer. Smith’s piece was commissioned by the Central band in 1975 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Swinney Conservatory of Music. Shroyer is professor emeritus of music at CMU, having taught at Central from 1976 until his retirement in 2010. He served as the dean of the conservatory and chair of the fine and performing arts division, as well as teaching numerous classes and applied lessons and conducting the Swinney Singers, Chamber Choir, A Capella Choir, and the Concert and Jazz Bands.

Both those pieces, along with two others, will be songs performed by the band at the upcoming Missouri Music Educators Association conference in the new year.
