Christie to Give Sunoo Lecture November 5

Dr. ChristieCentral Methodist University will welcome Daniel J. Christie next month as the speaker in this year’s iteration of The Dr. Harold W. Sunoo World Peace Lecture Series.

Christie, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Ohio State University, will present a speech entitled “People Powering Change.” The presentation shares a title with Christie’s podcast, which features “conversations with activists and scholars who are increasing harmony and equity in human relations.”

The lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 5, on the fourth floor of the Inman Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Over his career, Christie has sought to grow the field of peace psychology, which explores the psychological basis of peace, conflict, and violence within and between people. He serves as the editor of the Peace Psychology Book Series (Springer SBM) and editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Peace Psychology.

As a Fulbright Specialist in Peace and Conflict Studies, Christie has introduced peace psychology in India and Pakistan and has taught peace psychology courses and workshops as a visiting professor in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, South Africa, and Semester at Sea – a shipboard educational program that circumnavigates the world. His recent publications identify psychosocial conditions of social and political movements that result in socially just outcomes.

The Sunoo Lecture Series is held annually in honor of the late Dr. Harold Sunoo, former chair of the department of history and professor of political science. The Sunoo family established the series to sponsor an annual guest speaker to stimulate students to think about how they can use their education to contribute to world peace.
