Three CMU Students Named New MONSA Officers

Franklin, Ette, and DeckerA trio of students in the Central Methodist University nursing program were elected to the Missouri Nursing Students’ Association board of directors on Thursday, October 17.

The mission of the organization is to “enhance professional nursing students’ education and practice in all environments to assure quality, affordable, and accessible health care for the people of Missouri,” according to its website.

Students ready to accept leadership over that mission volunteered to run for various offices within the organization during the MONSA board meeting, including a total of four students associated with CMU.

The students created campaign flyers during a break and mingled with fellow members at the Wednesday night social before outlining their candidacies in speeches. When all the votes were in from current MONSA members, Alexis Decker of Columbia was named the new MONSA president, Veronica Franklin (Accelerated BSN Program) was elected secretary/treasurer, and Alex Ette (Accelerated BSN Program) was named public relations director.

“During this upcoming year, I hope to find ways to unify the nursing students across the state of Missouri through community outreach projects across the state,” said Decker of her goals as president. “I also hope to help my fellow nursing students feel prepared and excited to enter the work force once their schooling is complete. I really just hope to spend this year motivating and uplifting those around me.”

Franklin, a self-described Army brat with a bachelor’s degree in health science, was able to win votes partly on her past experience in similar roles. Ette said her goal as PR director is to “positively represent MONSA and provide members with accurate and interesting information in the form of newsletters, social media postings, convention schedules, and other promotional items.”
