Non-Traditional Career Exploration Day Set For October

Student in Health Professions lab.Central Methodist University is excited to be this year’s host for the Regional Professional Development Center’s Non-Traditional Career Exploration Day, set for October 17. The University will partner with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Heart of Missouri RPDC Career Advisor, Central Missouri RPDC Career Advisor, and Missouri Career Pathways Director.

The program will allow 7th and 8th grade students to experience non-traditional career exploration and have the opportunity to look at career paths identified as non-traditional based on their results from the Missouri Connection Career Cluster Inventory Assessment. A non-traditional career path is generally defined as one gender making up less than 25 percent of employment in that career cluster or pathway.

Students will be provided hands-on learning experiences aligned with their most prominent scores from the Inventory. Participants at CMU will specifically have the chance to experience the Health Services and Human Services career paths.

The Health Services path is open primarily to boys interested in the health care field, but girls interested in sports/athletic training will also be considered. Both boys and girls will have the opportunity to explore the Human Services path, which will consist of sessions exploring careers in criminal justice, forensics, and law enforcement.

The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 17, with participants in each career path attending various activities throughout the day before a large group discussion to close out the session.
