Week of Activities Will Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is a worldwide, yearly celebration that expresses support for the environment, and the Central Methodist University Environmental Science Club is taking part by hosting speakers and activities to raise awareness.

The group has organized various events and a scavenger hunt throughout the week during April 22-26.  The speakers are specialists from the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri River Relief, and US Geological Survey, Columbia Environmental Research Center.

The activities start off on Monday, April 22 with Dr. Jacob Westhoff, Aquatic Resource Scientist at the Missouri Department of Conservation. Dr. Westhoff will discuss the “Rarest fish in Missouri” at 6:30 p.m. in Stedman 200.

Tuesday, April 23, Steve Schnarr, Executive Director of Missouri River Relief, will present“ Learning to Love the Big Muddy” at 6:30 p.m. in Stedman 200.

Wednesday, April 24, Duane Chapman, of US Geological Survey, Columbia Environmental Research Center will speak on “Invasive Fishes in the Mississippi River Basin” at 6:30 p.m. in Stedman 200.

A nature scavenger hunt will be hosted on Friday, April 26 at the Besgrove Hodge Nature Sanctuary from 3 to 5:30 p.m.  There will be prizes, activities, hamburgers, hotdogs, and drinks available.

All events are free and open to the public.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.
