Central Methodist University is one of the few private institutions joining public colleges in Missouri participating in a state program called “Core 42,” a standard core transfer curriculum that streamlines transfer credits.
Core 42 provides a smooth transfer and ensures basic competencies in valuing, managing information, communicating, and high order thinking through the completion of at least 42-semester hours distributed across the broad knowledge areas of Communications, Humanities and Fine Arts, National & Mathematical Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Rita Gulstad, CMU’s provost, led the institution’s efforts to join with the public colleges. She said the goals of Core 42 dovetail with CMU’s Wheel, a set of university wide learning principles and associated outcomes adopted in 2016.
“Participating in the program makes transferring to Central Methodist extremely easy,” said Gulstad. “And it aligns perfectly with our mission.”
Transferring to CMU has increased in the past several months, according to Dr. Joe Parisi, vice president for enrollment management.
“Core 42 gives transfer students a level of confidence about one of their main concerns when changing colleges—transferring credits,” Parisi said. “Any time we can help them feel more comfortable and have a better experience, it’s a win.”
The completion of the Core 42 at any public institution will substitute for CMU’s general education requirement. Individual courses that comprise the Core 42 are guaranteed to transfer one-to-one at Central Methodist.
