Central Methodist University will host its annual “GEMS of Vocal Literature” recital on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m.
The performance will be held in the Swinney Conservatory of Music’s Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall on CMU’s main campus in Fayette, and is free and open to the public.
Accompanied by Mary Jane Nance and Jonelle Loehnig, the recital will be composed of Italian and American art songs, German lieder, French melodié, and arias from oratorio and opera.
Songs featured are composed by Rossini, Caldara, Handel, Schumann, Wolf, Mahler, Massenet, Fauré, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Roger Quilter, Charles Ives, Jake Heggie, Michael Head, Eric Thiman, and John Duke.
Performing students of Dr. Laura Wiebe, CMU assistant professor of music, are Rachel Martin, a music education major from Fayette; Cayla Carr, a music education major from Mount Sterling; Libby Cueni-Smith, an education and music education double major from Chillicothe; and Chely Stratton, a music ministry major from Raymore.
Performing students of Dr. Susan Quigley-Duggan, CMU professor of voice and opera, include Marissa Dickman, an education and music education double major from Maryland Heights; Keaton Denney, a music education major from Cole Camp;
Hailey Sage, an education and music education major from Fayette; Abby Ruggles, a music ministry major from Fayette; Malik Hughes, a music major from Saint Joseph; Josh Goggin, a music major from Fayette; Ezechiel Daos, a music major from Dixon; and Gannon Craig, a music education major from Salem.
The recital will culminate with the aria, The Trumpet Shall Sound from Handel’s Messiah, sung by baritone, Gannon Craig. Craig will be assisted by Mary Jane Nance on piano and Dakota Bartel on trumpet, a music major from Yorktown, Va. and student of Dr. John Perkins, CMU professor of music.
