As the multi-million dollar renovation of Stedman Hall of Science draws to a close, another innovative project is just getting started at Central Methodist University – the launch of an eSports team.
Central has put the finishing touches on an eSports competition arena near Puckett Field House. The team, coached by Donald Sledge, is eager to check out its new digs.
“This is going to be an incredible year,” Sledge said. “I can’t say enough about the commitment and support of President Drake and the rest of the administration. They’re solidly behind us.”
Sledge said the team will compete against other colleges across the country… virtually.
“Our travel budget is pretty low,” he said.
Sledge, who is assisted by Aaron Shockley, said the team will play some of the most popular games in the country—Overwatch, League of Legends, Rocket League, Star Craft II, and Madden Football.
The Eagle gamers – 14 of them – will be playing with nothing but the best. There are new keyboard and mouse combos built just for gamers, as well as special “void surround” gaming headsets. They’ll have oversized monitors, and they will sit in specially formed gaming chairs in a room designed and dimly lit just for gaming.
