Central Methodist University students recently participated in “Make A Difference Day” – a national event that promotes volunteerism.
The cold weather didn’t hold students back on Saturday, Oct. 28, as approximately 15 volunteered to work with two local entities – Fayette Area Community Garden, and Endless Options, Inc. Central’s Office of Civic Engagement paired with the two organizations to make the day possible.
“Participating in Make A Difference Day was an inspirational thing for me to experience,” said CMU student Kaitlin Head, a sophomore Health Sciences major from Columbia. “It made me happy to be able to go out into the local community and take part in a good deed.”
Students made their way to their work sites around 9 a.m., dressed in heavy, warm attire for the tasks at hand. One group prepared the local community garden for planting season. The garden, located on Silvey Street, is available for community use through Fayette Community Area Garden, according to Cassie Nappier, director of civic engagement at CMU.
The second group of volunteers helped out at Endless Options in Fayette. They worked to even out the yard behind the main building, and mounded dirt up against the raised patio – helping prevent potential hazards. One CMU student even used his personal vehicle to help transport material, Nappier said.
Central’s Office of Civic Engagement plans to continue participating in Make A Difference Day in the years to come, hoping for even more volunteers as awareness of the opportunity spreads.
