Members of the Swinney Conservatory of Music are presenting an open recital showcasing the pieces they will be performing at the Missouri Music Teachers Association competition at the end of October.
The free concert will be on Monday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kountz Recital Hall on the Fayette campus of Central Methodist University.
Performances represent music faculty from all fields, as well as a variety of students. Representing the studio of Larry Bennett, adjunct professor of low brass, is Michael Arnold, a junior music education major from Arnold, playing the euphonium. He will play “Sonata I (Cantabile and Spiritoso e Staccato)” by Galliard, “Fantasy” by Stojowski, and “Variations on ‘Annie Laurie’” by Pryor. He will be accompanied on piano by Zach Kierstead, a junior music major from Kirkwood.
From the studio of Lisa Thill, adjunct professor of flute, will be Mikaela Lewis, a senior music education major from Harrisburg, performing “Sixieme Solo de Concert” by J. Demersseman, with Dr. Barb Berwin, professor of music, on piano.
From the studio of Dr. Laura Wiebe, assistant professor of voice, will be performer McKenna Nelson, a senior music major from Macon, singing “Batti, batti, o bel Masetto” from the opera Don Giovanni by Mozart, and “Screw Loose” from Cry Baby by Schlesinger and Javerbaum. She will be accompanied by Mary Jane Nance on piano.
Representing the studio of Dr. John Perkins, professor of high brass, will be Susan Bishop, a senior music education major from Fayette, on horn. She will play “Allegro, Op. 70” by Schumann and “Morceau de Concert, Op. 94” by Saint-Saens. She is accompanied by Dr. Melissa Loehnig Simons, assistant professor of piano and theory, on piano.
In addition to these soloists, Central’s vaunted Brass Quintet will also be performing. They are tutored by Dr. Perkins. Included are Gannon Craig, senior music education major from Salem, on tuba; Josiah Beckett, a freshman religion and church leadership major from Salem, on trombone; Bishop on horn; Kody Bartel, a sophomore music major from Yorktown, Va., on trumpet; and Kevin Curry, a freshman music education major from Salisbury, on trumpet.
The quintet will play Three Pieces by Maurer, “Maestoso alla Marcia,” “Andante con moto,” and “Allegro grazioso; Folk Song Suite by Bulla, “Farewell” (Gaelic air); Galleons and Cutlasses by McKee, “Tempting Davy’s Grip”; and “That’s a Plenty” by Pollack and arranged by Cooper.
