During Central Methodist University’s freshman orientation in August, the incoming new students got their first taste of volunteerism. It will not be their last.
Students first gathered in Puckett Field House to learn about the importance of volunteering as reflected in Central’s mission. Cassie Nappier, director of Civic Engagement, expressed the significance of one small act and the impact it can have on its receiver.
Students then moved to the Philips-Robb Recreational Center to begin their first volunteer opportunity as Eagles.
Each student was given brown paper lunch sacks to decorate. Once decorated, students inserted a short letter of encouragement in each bag. They then placed a small bag of chips, cheese crackers, a pencil and eraser, instant oatmeal, fruit snacks, and a bottle of water into each bag.
The bags were collected to be delivered to local school students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Schools that received the goodie bags included Fayette Daly Elementary, St. Mary’s of Glasgow, Glasgow Elementary, New Franklin Elementary, David Barton Elementary in Boonville, and Hannah Cole Primary in Boonville. More than 1,400 goodie bags in all were delivered.
One of Central’s goals is to promote civility by showing students how one small act of kindness can bring a smile to another’s face. Given all the handmade “thank you” cards they received, Central’s new students have learned that lesson well, a good first step in volunteering.
