Central Methodist University hosted the Central Missouri Special Olympics Annual Bocce Ball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 16 as part of the regional Special Olympics competition.
Almost 90 Special Olympians from 33 mid-Missouri counties, known as the Central Region, came to the CMU campus, aiming to qualify for the state Special Olympics bocce ball competition scheduled for Oct. 13 in Jefferson City.
It was the second straight year CMU hosted the event. Last year it took place on CMU’s Davis Field, but this year moved indoors to the Philips-Robb Recreation Center. More than two dozen CMU students and faculty volunteered to help with the event.
CMU’s facilities and central location make it a great choice to host the event, according Diane Brimer, regional program director for Central Missouri’s Special Olympics program.
Central Methodist has offered the Philips-Robb Center as practice space this November for national Special Olympians who will be training for the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle later that summer, according to Cassie Nappier, CMU director of civic engagement and student programming.
