Two Central Methodist University undergraduates are spending their summer at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Dauphin Island, Alabama.
Alexis Hagemeyer and Meagan Hare are seniors in CMU's Marine Biology Program, and learned about the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) during their Barrier Island Ecology course. As a part of the course studies, students take a trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab during spring break.
Hagemeyer (St. Peters, Mo.) and Hare (Cole Camp, Mo.) are working with DISL's Dr. John Lehrter on their senior capstone project for CMU. The topic of their project is ocean acidification effects on the lower food chain. The CMU students will perform phytoplankton growth and grazing experiments in Lehrter's lab and experiments with algal cultures in Dr. Jeff Krause’s lab to investigate their topic.
The plan is to present their findings, along with that of other DISL/National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates students, at a scientific poster presentation event on Aug. 3 in the Shelby Atrium on the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Campus.
Hagemeyer hopes to return to DISL for graduate school.
