CMU Leadership Organization Inducts Members, Presents Awards

Only in its second semester at Central Methodist University, the National Society of Leadership and Success has already blossomed – guiding students to plan and meet goals while developing extraordinary leadership skills.

The organization was founded on CMU’s campus in the fall by LaToya Gaines, a senior nursing major from Columbia. It welcomed 90 members, according to the organization’s advisor Jackie Jackson, director of annual giving and operations for CMU’s Advancement and Alumni Relations Department.

The NSLS has a mission of building leaders who make a better world. Members engage in personal growth and development through leadership training seminars, group meetings designed around planning and reaching goals, and by listening to motivational speakers.

Students are selected for membership based on academic standing and leadership potential.

“I’m incredibly proud of what these students have achieved,” Jackson said. “Members set goals that are challenging, but achievable; to get on the Dean’s list, to select a major, to secure employment – you name it. The structure provided through NSLS helps them stay focused and find success.”

On Saturday, April 29, members belonging to CMU’s NSLS chapter gathered for an induction ceremony, and to celebrate achievements.

Four members received the National Engaged Leader Award, which is given to students recognized for commitment and continual success. Recipients were Catherine Braun, a junior nursing major from Eugene; Tammy Frees, a senior nursing major from Fayette; Veronica Hancock, a senior nursing major from Bolivar; and Crystin Wilson, a junior athletic training major from Raymore.

“I have been blessed to work with these four ladies for the entire academic year, and I can tell you with confidence they are leaders building a better world,” Jackson said. “I can’t wait to see what they will achieve moving forward.”
