Each academic year, Central Methodist University’s Division of Health Professions recognizes students for excellence in their fields of study.
For 2016-17, 37 nursing students received pins, and six nursing and athletic training students were honored with special awards.
Traditionally, nursing pins are worn to identify the school from which a nurse graduated. When a student receives one, it is presented as a symbolic “welcome” into the nursing profession. Students received pins during a ceremony on Friday, May 12.
Four nursing students also were recognized with awards, according to Megan Hess, chair of the Division of Health Professions and associate professor of nursing.
Additionally, two CMU athletic training students were honored on Sunday, May 7, according to Wade Welton, director of CMU’s Athletic Training program.

Nursing students recognized with individual CMU awards were Mallory Haley, who won the Outstanding Clinician Award; Molly Meneely, winning the Erwin and Hazel Wiedal Award; Brianna Mitchem, with the American Nurses Association Award; and Meredith Van Maanen, who was given the Outstanding Scholar Award.
Athletic training students honored included junior Reece Carmichael of Canton, who won the Mark and Kathy Dempsey Athletic Training Student Clinical Excellence Award; and junior Mackenzie Cullifer of Moberly, winning the Glenn L. McElroy, MD Athletic Training Student Academic Excellence Award.
