Fine And Performing Arts Announce Stand-Outs

The Central Methodist University Division of Fine and Performing Arts celebrated student honorees on Sunday evening May 7. Together, the music and theatre departments gave out nearly 50 awards for outstanding performances and accomplishments for the 2017-18 school year.

Special assignments in the music program for next year were awarded to Daniel Terry (senior music major from St. Charles) as Opera Fellow; Kay Wilken (senior music education major from Cole Camp) as Chorale Fellow; Katelyn Hanvey (senior music education major from Centralia) as the Keith House Band Fellow; Tiffany Hankins (senior music education major from Clifton Hill) as Band Fellow;

Danielle DeBrodie (senior music education major from Jefferson City) as Conservatory Singers fall semester manager; Cayla Carr (sophomore music education major from Mount Sterling) as Conservatory Singers spring semester manager; and Josh Miller (junior music education major from Waynesville) and Matthew Johnson (senior music education major from Pacific) as the Drum Majors for the CMU Marching Band.

Several music students won multiple awards. Ryan Lewis (senior music education major from Kaiser) received the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Collegiate Honor Award, the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholastic Award, and the Dane Nelson Memorial Award.

Katelyn Hanvey took home the Sigma Alpha Iota Collegiate Honor Award, the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award, the Raney-Winter National Association for Music Education – Collegiate Award, The Hickman Award for Music, and the Prof. Paul A. Montemurro Award.

Kevin Helmerichs (junior music education major from Lake Ozark) received the Luther T. Spayde Award and the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs String Award.

Individual awards from the Swinney Conservatory of Music went to Daniel Terry for the Music Teachers National Association Student Achievement Recognition Award; DaSean Stokes (senior music major from St. Roberts) for the American Choral Directors Association National Student Choral Musician Award; Tiffany Hankins for the W.D. Settle Award;

Mikaela Lewis (junior music education major from Harrisburg) for the Martin C. Harrall Award; Emily Day (senior music education major from Wellsville) for the R. Paul Drummond Memorial Award; Kay Wilken for the Helen Puckett Thogmorton Award for Excellence in Music; Susan Bishop (senior music education major from Fayette) for the Nancy Thompson Jones Gem Award;

Josh Miller for the Herman C. Byrd Award; Josh Stettes (sophomore music education major from Pacific) and Keaton Denney (freshman music education major from Cole Camp) for the Swinney Conservatory Outstanding Freshmen Awards; Parker Johnson (senior computer science major from Richmond) for the Swinney Conservatory Outstanding Musician Award for a non-major;

Amy Keene (junior music education major from Fulton) for the Swinney Conservatory Super Hero Award; McKenna Nelson (junior music education major from Macon) for the Mike Magyar Fine Arts-Leadership Annual Award; Katie Roberts (senior theatre arts major from Rolla) for the Dr. Joseph E. Geist Award in Performing Arts; and Breilly Roy (senior marine biology major from Trenton) for the Martin E. Kooi Excellence in Theatre Arts.

On the theatre side of performing arts, the S. Frederick Rhoads Award Winners honored the following students, winners in their categories: Myriah Araiza (sophomore theatre arts major from Columbia) as Best Female Actor in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Olivia in Twelfth Night; Dalton Grafton (freshman theatre arts major from Lexington) as Best Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of the Stage Manager in Our Town;

Nickie Foland (senior communications major from Fayette) for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Malvolio in Twelfth Night; Breilly Roy as Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Feste, the Fool, in Twelfth Night; Daniel Terry as Best Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical Performance for his role as Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore;

Anna Kay (senior music major from Boonville) as Best Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical Performance for her role as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore; Malachi Gerke (former theatre arts student from Pilot Grove) as Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical Performance for his role as Linus Van Pelt in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown;

Breilly Roy as Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical Performance for her role as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown; Addison McGuire (senior biology major from Higbee) as Outstanding Improvisational Actor; and Ben Kixmiller (freshman theatre arts major from Prairie Home) as the Most Improved – The Phoenix Award.

Behind the scenes awards went to Karlie Noll (senior theatre arts major from New Cambria) for Best Stage Manager for H.M.S. Pinafore; Parker Johnson for Best Assistant Director for Twelfth Night; Terri Banderet (junior biology student from St. Louis) for Tech All Star;

Myriah Araiza for Most Versatile Player; Taylor Perry (freshman music education major from Centralia) for Outstanding Newcomer; and Hunter Atterbury (senior business major from Keytesville) for Shop Superstar.

Dr. Dori Waggoner, associate professor of music, is the Chair of the Division of Fine Arts. Heading up the Little Theatre is Dr. Mark Kelty, professor of theatre.
