CMU Trumpet And Friends Concert

Variety is the focus of the upcoming CMU Trumpet and Friends Concert to be held Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kountz Recital Hall of the Swinney Conservatory of Music on the Fayette campus of Central Methodist University.

The free concert, open to all, will include the musical groups CMU Trumpet Ensemble, CMU Brass Quintet, CMU Flute Choir, a saxophone ensemble, and a group called “friends.” The music will be eclectic and diverse.

The lead group, CMU Trumpet Ensemble, is coached by Dr. John Perkins, professor of music and high brass at CMU since 2004.

The eight-member group will perform “Intrada” from Suite for Five by Ronald Lo Presti; “Groovy Vamp” by David Marlatt; “London Bridge” by Jim Parcel and arranged by Marlatt; “Revecy Venir du Printans” by Claude Le Jeune; “Air” from Water Music Mini Suite by G.F. Handel and arranged by Marlatt; “Sound Reflections” by Richard Byrd; and “Brazil: 250 Years” by Glauber F.A. Santiago.

The CMU Trumpet Ensemble was selected to perform at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 2014. They also play for dedications and are featured on Concert Band Tours, plus other events.

Members of the CMU Trumpet Ensemble include Kody Bartel (sophomore music major from Yorktown, Va.); Katelyn Hanvey (senior music education major from Centralia); Ryan Nakanishi (freshman music major from Rolla); Leah Trammell (senior music education major from Union); and Nathan Verhulst (freshman pre-athletic training major from Belton).

They will be assisted by percussionists Ethan Mann (junior music education major from Pacific); Brendan Wiesehan (sophomore music major from Villa Ridge); Michael Williams (junior music education major from Knob Noster); and Shad Stith (freshman music major from Huntsville).

Also performing is a second brass group, the CMU Brass Quintet, also coached by Dr. Perkins. They will play “Escape” by Kevin McKee and “Amparito Roca” by Jamie Texidor and arranged by Robert Madeson.

The CMU Brass Quintet is comprised of Bartel and Hanvey, trumpets; Susan Bishop (senior music education major from Fayette), French horn; Kevin Helmerichs (junior music education major from Lake Ozark), trombone; and Gannon Craig (junior music education major from Salem), tuba.

The CMU Brass Quinet won the Missouri Music Teachers Association competition in fall of 2016 in the Collegiate Brass Ensemble—Upper Division category. They also perform during Concert Band Tours and to support music degree recitals.

The CMU Flute Choir is coached by Dr. Dori Waggoner, associate professor of music and chair of the Division of Fine Arts. She is also Dean of the Swinney Conservatory of Music.

The CMU Flute Choir will perform “Scherzo Brilliante” by Arthur Severn and “Camptown Races” by Stephen Foster and arranged by Holcombe.

Performing with the CMU Flute Choir will be Ki-Jana Blount (senior criminal justice major from St. Robert); Kaitlyn Gebhardt (senior music education major from Columbia); Cheyenne Knecht (freshman criminal justice major from Lawson); Mikaela Lewis (junior music education major from Harrisburg); Josh Miller (junior music education major from Waynesville); Samantha Shively (sophomore music education major from Hunnewell); Denise Weigand (senior physics major from Weatherby); and Dr. Waggoner.
