The rousing sounds of the Central Methodist University Jazz Band will fill the halls of Linn Memorial Church in Fayette on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:30 pm. as they present their final concert of the semester.
The concert is free and open to anyone who enjoys jazz.
This performance will feature 14 jazz students plus two guest soloists. In addition, nearly every student will be performing a solo in at least one song.
Featured as guest soloists will be CMU President Dr. Roger Drake on piano and Professor Ryan McLouth on guitar in their renditions of “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues” Danny O'Keefe, and “Raisin’ a Ruckus” by Buddy Emmons.
The CMU Jazz Band is directed by Dr. Ron Shroyer, dean emeritusof the Swinney Conservatory of Music, and his wife Jo Ellen Ming Shroyer, CMU Class of ’79 and adjunct professor of music.
Works to be performed include “Cute” by Neal Hefti; “Georgia On My Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael with arrangement by Sammy Nestico; “I’ll Be Around” by George Shearing; “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” by B. Hilliard and D. Mann and arranged by Eberhart;
“Jumpin’ at the Woodside” by Lester Young; “Lean Baby” by Van Alexander with arrangement by Billy May; “Makin’ Whoopee” by Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson and arranged by Dave Barduhn; “Perdido” by Juan Tizol and Luther Henderson;
“Shine:” by Ford Dabney with arrangement by Ron Shroyer; “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy; “Strike Up the Band” by George and Ira Gershwin and arranged by Jack Cooper; and “Yakety Sax” by Boots Randolph with arrangement by Ron Shroyer.
Members of the CMU Jazz Band this semester include Matthew Johnson (senior, music education major from Pacific) on alto saxophone; Curtis Lierheimer (junior music education major from Mexico) on alto saxophone; Rowan Hynick (sophomore music education major from Marshall) on tenor saxophone;
Josh Stettes (sophomore music education major from Pacific) on tenor saxophone; Josh Miller (junior music education major from Waynesville) on baritone saxophone; Ryan Nakanishi (freshman music education major from Rolla) on trumpet; Nathan Verhulst (freshman athletic training major from Belton) on trumpet; Bryan Berliner (freshman music education major from Hermann) on trumpet;
Kevin Helmerichs (junior music education major from Lake Ozarks) on trombone; Gannon Craig (junior music education major from Salem) on tuba; Ani Milovich (junior music education major from Catawissa) on piano; Ron Shroyer on guitar; CMU alumnus Ted Spayde ’70 on bass; and Brendan Wiesehan (sophomore music education major from Villa Ridge) on drums and xylophone.
