It was an exciting and interesting afternoon as students carefully set up their science projects, and waited for a turn to explain their experiments and findings to judges.
On Tuesday, March 14, Central Methodist University hosted the regional Intel Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) competition, which welcomed roughly 100 students in grades 6-12 from several area schools to Central’s campus, according to Dr. James “Tiger” Gordon, CMU professor of chemistry and division chair.
Participants set up display boards just as they would in a traditional science fair setting. Their projects were graded twice – once without the students present, and once with them present, as judges examined the boards and talked with the students about their research findings and ideas.
One overall winner is declared eligible to advance to the international competition, and this year’s winner was Sarah Mason, a senior from Southwest R-1 School in Ludlow, Mo.
Students from Chillicothe, Fayette, Glasgow (St. Mary’s), Higbee, La Plata, Moberly, and Southwest R-1 took part in the competition, with many other awards presented to students from these schools.
