A contemporary music recital is being presented by members of the Swinney Conservatory of Music of Central Methodist University on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall.
The students involved are members of a class called Analysis of Contemporary Art Music, taught by Dr. Dori Waggoner, associate professor of music and dean of the Conservatory. Their goal is to bring a variety of modern music, poetry, and art to the audience.
The concert is open to the public at no cost.
Selections will include “Claire de lune” by Debussy, performed by Susan Bishop (senior music education major from Fayette), soprano, and Mary Jane Nance as collaborative pianist; “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Hindemith, performed by Adam Christal (sophomore music education major from Boonville) on clarinet and Nance on piano;
“Clapping Music” by Reich, performed by Bishop, Katelyn Hanvey (senior music education major from Centralia), DaSean Stokes (senior music major from St. Robert), Daniel Terry (senior music education major from St. Charles), and Ryan Lewis (senior music education major from Kaiser);
“4’33”” by Cage, performed by Bishop, Hanvey, Stokes, Terry, and Lewis; “The Lordly Hudson” by Rorem, performed by Terry; “Estudios Sencillos” by Brouwer, performed by Kevin Helmrichs (junior music education major from Lake Ozark) on guitar;
“Suite for Brass Quintet” by Haufrecht, performed by the CMU Brass Quintet: Kody Bartel (sophomore music major from Yorktown, Va.), trumpet; Hanvey on trumpet; Bishop on horn; Helmerichs on trombone; and Gannon Craig (junior music education major from Salem) on tuba;
and “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Ron Shroyer, adjunct professor and dean emeritus of the Conservatory, performed by Lewis on clarinet and Nance on piano.
