A new writing competition on the role of capitalism and free markets is being introduced this semester at Central Methodist University.
The competition is being sponsored by CMU alumnus Earl Bates, Class of 1961, and his wife, Sunny of Big Fork, Mont. The winner will receive $1,000. The competition is open to all current degree-seeking students from either the CMU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Fayette or its College of Graduate and Extended Studies (off-campus and online students).
The topic for the paper is: The best hope for people around the world—including those in developed nations—to escape poverty lies in property rights, the rule of law, and free markets.
Competitors must have completed a course covering microeconomic theory from CMU or properly transferred from another institution.
Deadline for the entries is March 31, 2017. Papers must be submitted in APA style with Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. They must include an abstract, a reference page, and parenthetical citation.
The winner will travel to CMU in late April or early May to present the paper before an audience and accept the prize. Papers will be evaluated by a committee of CMU faculty to determine the winner. All papers will be submitted to turnitin.com as part of the evaluation.
