CMU Eagle Select Scholarship To Cairo's Leathers

College is challenging enough; paying for college is another matter altogether. Janie Leathers of Cairo now can focus on the academic portion at Central Methodist University after she earned a four-year, full-tuition scholarship.

Leathers, a senior at Northeast High School, topped a field of 33 outstanding students from five states at CMU’s annual fall Eagle Select academic competition. The invitation-only event was held Nov. 17 on the CMU campus in Fayette.

The scholarship is valued at over $90,000, according to CMU Director of Admission Adam Jenkins. Leathers will enroll at CMU next fall, with plans to major in biology. She is the daughter of Ben and Mary Ellen Leathers of Cairo.

CMU’s Eagle Select scholarship event is a for high school seniors who meet strict eligibility standards, including a grade point average of 3.5 and a minimum of a 26 ACT score. Eagle Select tests their verbal, written, and mathematical skills.

Many more of the 33 Eagle Select competitors will receive scholarships to CMU, Jenkins noted.

CMU will hold its second and final Eagle Select event for 2016-17 on Thursday, Feb. 2. Applications to compete will be accepted through Monday, Jan. 30, and successful applicants will be notified by CMU.
