Gallery Event Through December 15 Only

The Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette is offering a special December exhibition and sale.

The event began Thursday, Dec. 1 and will run through Thursday, Dec. 15. It is free and open to the public. The Ashby-Hodge Gallery will be open daily except Saturday (Dec. 10) from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

The exhibit in the main gallery is a show by students in art classes taught by Ann Schaffer, adjunct professor of art, and Jill Barringhaus, adjunct professor of photography. The gallery is an interesting array of photographs and drawings by current students.

Also on show in the entryway of the gallery are the two winning pieces of art, chosen by the Gallery and President and Mrs. Roger Drake to be used on their CMU Christmas card and invitation this year.

One is a collage of eagles in the shape of a Christmas tree by Taylor Ellebracht, freshman biology major from Boonville, and the other a watercolor of T. Berry Smith Hall by Mikaela Lewis, sophomore music education major from Harrisburg.

The contest winner from last year, senior DaSean Stokes, music major from St. Robert, is also on display. The three works become permanent pieces of the Gallery’s art collection.

In the opposite gallery are a number of original paintings, prints, lithographs, and posters on sale from the Ashby-Hodge collection. Also, free for admiring but not for sale are a number of the Salvador Dali artworks still on display from the fall show.

Every day of the exhibition, Dr. Joe Geist, registrar of the Ashby-Hodge collection, will be available to sign copies of his newly published book More Looking at Stages, Vol. 3. The contents include Geist’s reviews and musings on theatre performances—shows and musicals, exhibits, and museums from all over the world. He also includes “curtain calls” for some of his favorite artists who have passed on since the writing of his second volume of “Stages.”
